Honorary Wildlife Warden Training

A three-day Honorary Wildlife Warden Training Course was organised on 27th-29th September 2009. A total of eight participants joined in, which include five staffs from Reef Guardian, one staff from LIDR, and two representatives from Beluran District Office. The course consisted of classroom lectures, onsite practical training and tests and final written exam.

Project AWARE

On 16th September 2006, a Project AWARE – International Clean-Up Day was organised for the first time in SIMCA, in joint-collaboration between Reef Guardian and Lankayan Island Dive Resort. This activity involves Lankayan and Billean Islands. The underwater clean-up and beach cleanup were participated by 70 people, which include resort’s in-house guest, staff, marine police personnel, Police Field Force (PFF), and army. The cleanup efforts gathered about 200kg of trash from the islands and about 70% of these trashes were plastic mineral bottles.

A Talk at Sung Siew Secondary School

On 8th September 2006, Reef Guardian was invited by Sung Siew Secondary School to give a short talk with regards to SIMCA and marine conservation. This talk was part of the school’s Green or Been team community project by Maxis CyberlinQ where nature conservation theme was chosen. The talk highlighted SIMCA’s objectives and general marine conservation issues, such as marine turtle conservation and coral reef conservation

Marine Turtle Training Workshop

On 6th – 9th September 2006, Achier Chung attended a marine turtle training workshop which was organised by Marine Research Foundation (MRF) in Kota Kinabalu. Among the presenters during the workshop were the director of MRF, Dr. Nicholas Pilcher and Dr. Jeff Miller from Australia. The workshop provides general information on sea turtle biology and also had a series of discussions amongst working groups from WWF-Malaysia (Sabah), Conservation International Philippines and Indonesia.

Poster Presentation during the First Asia Pacific Coral Reef Symposium

A poster entitled “Sugud Islands Marine Conservation Area, Sabah Malaysia” was presented by Achier Chung at the First Asia Pacific Coral Reef Symposium, University Chinese Hong Kong, Hong Kong which was held from 18th – 24th June 2006. About 240 participants from Asia Pacific as well as Europe, Canada and USA attended the symposium. At least 250 oral and posters presentation were carried out in this symposium, covering wide range of issues on marine protected area, coral & fish biology and research, genetic and ecotourism.

Sulu-Sulawesi Seascape Project: Seascape-wide 4P IEC Strategy Workshop

On 7th-9th March 2006, a mini workshop called “Sulu-Sulawesi Seascape Project: Seascape-wide 4P IEC Strategy Workshop” which was organised by Conservation International (CI) Philippines was attended by Reef Guardian lead marine biologist, Achier Chung. Held at Tagaytay, Philippines, the workshop emphasizes on the environmental issues within Sulu and Sulawesi Sea.
