SUGUD ISLANDS MARINE RESEARCH CENTRE (SIMRC)
Sugud Islands Marine Research Centre (SIMRC) was officiated on 9th June 2013 by Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment, Datuk Pang Yuk Ming at Billean Island, where it is situated at. In conjunction to this event, the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Reef Guardian, Sabah Wildlife Department and Cardiff University was also conducted to secure partnership in the management of the research centre.
The objectives of SIMRC establishment are:
- To enhance knowledge and skills on marine research and monitoring through joint training, workshops, and research for effective management of marine resources and biodiversity conservation
- To provide training and teaching facilities to local and international universities and institutions for hands-on field experiences in tropical coral reef ecosystem
- To facilitate restocking of commercially-important and threatened marine species in Sabah region through mariculture practices
- To promote awareness on marine conservation to public and local stakeholders
