Visitation by The Tubbataha Protected Area Management Board (TPAMB)

The Tubbataha Protected Area Management Board (TPAMB) conducted a visit to Lankayan Island on 19th-22nd July 2009. The exchange visit was one of TPAMB exchange programme to learn and exchange knowledge of good practices of Marine Protected Area (MPA) Management. The main objectives of their visit to SIMCA were to gain insight on how government and community members work in SIMCA and to understand Malaysia government experiences in planning, funding and monitoring the development projects implemented by local authorities.


Reef Check Training

Reef Guardian invited Julian Hyde, the general manager of Reef Check Malaysia and Helen Brunt from Marine Conservation Society to conduct a Reef Check training to Reef Guardian divers on 1st-3rd June 2009. The objective of the training is to upgrade the understanding of Reef Check method and standardise the methodology of data collection and sharing. A 3-day training course was carried out at Lankayan Island, which comprises of classroom sessions, practices on the beach, a trial survey and actual surveys on the reef and exam. Three Reef Guardian staffs were trained and they were successfully certified as Reef Check Eco-Diver from the training. During the period, Julian and Helen helped Reef Guardian out in the conduct of marine education programme on students and a teacher from Sung Siew School, Sandakan.

Poster Presentation at Smithsonial Natural Museum

On 19th May 2009, a pre-workshop on “Ocean success story” was held at Smithsonian Natural History Museum. About 30 participants with majority of the from North America gathered to discuss on success measures and sharing of experience and knowledge of their works. The actual presentation day was on 20th May 2009, with about 20 talks and 20 posters about success stories. Reef Guardian was the only representative from Malaysia to attend the pre-workshop and workshop. Reef Guardian presented its success story in poster format, which outlines the basic information on SIMCA formation and the mechanism on how SIMCA functions.
